The craft, and who hires it

Brand launches, repositioning, brand refreshes, and M&A rebrands — hired to define the platform before identity or campaign work begins; also the nearest home for brand-valuation/brand-economics consulting engagements (Interbrand-class).

The brand-level strategic craft: defining what a brand stands for — purpose, values, audience, competitive frame, and long-term perception goals — as the platform from which campaigns, identity, and messaging are briefed. Evidenced in the work as a durable brand platform or organizing brand idea carried across executions, or as an explicit strategy deliverable (brand platform deck, brand book, repositioning case study). High-level brand positioning, competitive analysis, and mission alignment sit inside this craft.

Tag it when…

Tag when the work IS a brand-strategy deliverable (platform deck, brand book, repositioning case study) OR when a brand-level platform is legibly the engine of the work — e.g. a platform line/idea carried consistently across multiple executions — or when brand strategy is explicitly credited.

Never tag it when…

Never tag for the plan behind one specific campaign (that goes to strategy_campaign_strategy) or for the positioning statement craft alone (strategy_brand_positioning). Never tag the L0 Brand Strategy SERVICE row — that is the credit/offer tier, not a classify target. Never tag the visual expression of the strategy (that goes to Design / Brand Identity Design). Genre, execution treatment, and content_type are never the rule basis — an emotional anthem film is not automatically brand strategy; the platform must be legible.

Easily mistaken for 6 other crafts

Every other page suggests neighbours by similarity. This one navigates by difference: each line names the craft this is confused with, and the rule for telling them apart.

  • strategy brand positioning — Positioning is a component: the competitive-slot statement. Full-platform work (purpose + values + audience + frame) tags brand_strategy; a discrete positioning deliverable tags brand_positioning.
  • strategy campaign strategy — Brand strategy outlives any one campaign; the plan for a specific campaign flight is campaign_strategy — even when it inherits the brand platform.
  • strategy creative strategy — Brand strategy defines what the brand stands for; creative strategy translates that into the organizing creative idea and brief.
  • Brand Strategy (L0 service) — Same words, different tier: L0 = the vendor offering/credit line; this leaf = the classify target.
  • strategy employer branding — If the audience is prospective/current employees and the platform is an EVP, tag employer_branding.
  • Video Production / film crafts (cinematography, sound design, brand copywriting) — The corpus exemplars are anthem films co-tagged with their film crafts — those making crafts always tag separately; brand_strategy tags ONLY the legible platform craft, never rides in on production value or emotional register.

At what size it applies

Asset grain: the whole piece either IS a strategy deliverable or legibly carries the brand platform to a buyer. Strategy is never a clip-able beat — do not moment-tag it; a beat stating a brand claim belongs to messaging axes, not this craft.

Pieces that settle the definition

  • WINNING ISN’T FOR EVERYONE | WINNER | CINDY NGAMBA — One execution of Nike's 'Winning Isn't for Everyone' brand platform — the platform idea, not a single ad concept, is the engine.
  • WINNING ISN'T FOR EVERYONE | CHARLES-ANTOINE KOUAKOU | NIKE — Same platform carried across athletes — the cross-execution consistency is the brand-strategy signal.
  • WINNING ISN’T FOR EVERYONE | AGAIN | LEBRON JAMES | NIKE — Platform flagship — brand-level idea shaping perception beyond one campaign flight.
  • For Aaron Pike & Oksana Masters: tough roads make for tougher racers. #MilanoCortina2026 — Extension of the same brand platform to Paralympic athletes — platform breadth as strategy evidence.
