The craft, and who hires it
Hired for campaign print and OOH creative: posters and billboard artwork, brochures, annual reports, direct mail, event programs — whenever a brand needs press-ready artwork and physical finish quality (paper stock, spot color, foil, emboss, binding) executed by print specialists.
The craft of designing and producing printed brand materials — posters, brochures, editorial and campaign print, direct mail, and large-format OOH artwork — including the production layer: prepress, color management, substrate and finish specification, and press-ready file preparation. Preparing visual assets for print, ensuring quality and consistency across printed materials.
Tag it when…
Tag when the showcased artifact is printed matter or artwork prepared for print. Checkable signals: visible paper/substrate and print finishes (foil, emboss, letterpress, die-cut), photographed printed spreads, posters or mailers as the presented deliverable, billboard/OOH artwork shown as the produced print piece, prepress/dieline context.
Never tag it when…
Never tag a screen-native layout with no print destination shown — that goes to design_graphic_design. A product pack goes to print_physical_design_packaging_design even though it is printed; installed large-format graphics in a space go to print_physical_design_environmental_design. The layout, illustration, or typographic crafts inside the printed piece tag ADDITIONALLY, never instead. Never trigger off channel or format words alone ('OOH', 'print ad', 'poster' as a content label) — channel/content-type vocabulary is not a craft basis (boundary law); the signal is the produced print artifact itself.
Easily mistaken for 4 other crafts
Every other page suggests neighbours by similarity. This one navigates by difference: each line names the craft this is confused with, and the rule for telling them apart.
- design graphic design — Graphic Design is the layout/visual craft regardless of medium; tag Print Production only when print output or production craft (substrate, finish, prepress) is what the item demonstrates. Both may co-tag on a printed piece.
- print physical design packaging design — If the printed object is a product pack (box, bottle, label), it is Packaging Design, not general print.
- print physical design environmental design — Large-format graphics INSTALLED in a space (signage, murals, exhibit graphics) are Environmental Design; Print Production covers the freestanding printed piece.
- design illustration — Illustration is the drawn artwork craft; Print Production is getting artwork onto paper. An illustrated poster co-tags both.
At what size it applies
Asset tag when the whole item IS the printed piece or its direct documentation (a poster, a photographed brochure, a print-campaign showcase) — the piece IS this, to a buyer. When a brand film or case study merely lingers on printed collateral for a beat, that beat is a MOMENT on the segment — the film does not become print production.
