The craft, and who hires it

Brands and agencies buy art direction to set and hold a consistent visual point of view across a campaign — governing shoots, asset sets, and executing vendors; often engaged alongside brand identity or campaign production (the benchmark §6 'strongest gap' craft, corroborated by Koto).

The overarching visual authorship of a piece or campaign: choosing and unifying the look — composition, palette, styling, and the casting of visual elements — across whatever crafts execute it. A hireable craft in its own right, not a seniority title (Koto lists 'Art Direction' verbatim in its craft menu).

Tag it when…

Tag when a deliberate, unified visual point of view visibly governs the work beyond any single executing craft: coordinated palette/styling/composition across elements, styled sets/wardrobe/props in stills, or a signature campaign look repeated across assets. The signal is the governing LOOK, not the polish of any one element.

Never tag it when…

Never tag merely because a piece is well-designed — competent execution belongs to the executing leaf (Graphic Design, Photography, Illustration…). Never use as a synonym for film directing (performance/camera authorship goes to Direction under Video Production) or for Brand Strategy (positioning is not a look).

Easily mistaken for 4 other crafts

Every other page suggests neighbours by similarity. This one navigates by difference: each line names the craft this is confused with, and the rule for telling them apart.

  • design graphic design — Graphic Design executes the layout; Art Direction is the governing look ACROSS executions — tag both only when both are independently visible
  • video production live action direction — Film-set authorship of performance and camera is Direction (Video Production); Art Direction is the visual-world authorship and applies across stills and film alike
  • design brand identity design — Brand Identity Design builds the reusable SYSTEM; Art Direction is the authored look of a specific piece or campaign, which may sit inside or outside a system
  • photography conceptual — An art-directed photograph tags Photography for the capture craft; add Art Direction only when the governing styled look is itself the demonstrable work

At what size it applies

Almost always an ASSET tag — to a buyer, art direction is what the whole piece IS governed by. A distinctly art-directed passage inside a longer film (a styled dream sequence, a set-piece tableau) is a beat you'd clip and reference — a MOMENT tag.
