The craft, and who hires it

Hired when a brand wants relatable, human, in-context imagery: social media feeds, ad campaigns, product and landing pages, brand image libraries — the aspirational 'this could be your life' layer of a campaign.

Photography that shows people using or living with a product, service, or brand in believable real-life settings — candid-feeling, aspirational scenes where the human context and environment carry the frame, selling the life around the brand rather than the object in isolation.

Tag it when…

Tag when the photograph stages or captures everyday human activity with the brand/product embedded in the scene: people interacting naturally with the product or service, real or real-feeling locations (home, street, workplace, outdoors), natural-feeling light and styling. People and environment dominate the frame; the product reads as part of the life, not the sole subject.

Never tag it when…

Never tag when the object sits isolated on a set or sweep (that goes to photography_product or photography_still_life). Never tag documentary coverage of an actual branded occasion (that goes to photography_event). Never tag when high-fashion stylization or art direction is itself the point (that goes to photography_editorial). Channel and content-type never decide — an image being a social post or ad does not make it lifestyle; the staged-real-life scene does.

Easily mistaken for 4 other crafts

Every other page suggests neighbours by similarity. This one navigates by difference: each line names the craft this is confused with, and the rule for telling them apart.

  • photography event — Event documents a real occasion that happened (conference, launch); lifestyle stages or captures generic everyday life. 'Was this a specific branded happening?' → event.
  • photography editorial — Both can feature people; editorial is visibly art-directed for aesthetic/story effect (styled talent, wardrobe, magazine sensibility) — lifestyle aims for candid believability.
  • photography product — If the product alone fills the frame with no human/life context, it is product photography; a hand holding the product in a lived scene is lifestyle.
  • photography still life — No people and an art-directed object arrangement → still life; lifestyle needs human activity or its immediate traces in a lived environment.

At what size it applies

Asset tag when the image IS a lifestyle photograph. Moment tag when a lifestyle-still beat appears inside a larger asset — a stills sequence inside a brand film, or the lifestyle-photography section of a page — without re-typing the parent.
