The craft, and who hires it

Hired for e-commerce PDP imagery, catalogs, product feature sections, and launch assets — when a brand needs the product itself rendered accurately and desirably for commerce and product marketing.

Focused, high-resolution photography of a specific product — hero shots and detail/feature close-ups where the product itself, isolated or minimally propped, is the entire subject, lit and staged to show its design, materials, and features.

Tag it when…

Tag when the product is the frame's sole subject: on-sweep or clean-background hero shots, macro/detail crops of materials and finishes, spec-style angle sets. The purpose is showing THIS product's design and features; propping, if any, is minimal and subordinate.

Never tag it when…

Never tag the product embedded in a human/life scene (that goes to photography_lifestyle). Never tag multi-object art-directed compositions where the arrangement is the creative point (that goes to photography_still_life). Never tag photoreal CGI product imagery — a rendered product is 3D Product Renders under Design, not photography, however camera-real it looks; photoreal is a look, not a camera.

Easily mistaken for 3 other crafts

Every other page suggests neighbours by similarity. This one navigates by difference: each line names the craft this is confused with, and the rule for telling them apart.

  • photography still life — One product, commerce intent, features foregrounded → product. Multiple objects/props arranged as a composition, aesthetics foregrounded → still life.
  • 3D Product Renders (Design) — If it was rendered, not photographed, it is never product photography — check for CGI provenance/credits; photoreal look does not transfer the craft, and the render leaf lives under Design.
  • photography lifestyle — The moment a person or lived environment contextualizes the product, the frame is lifestyle; product photography isolates.

At what size it applies

Asset tag when the item IS a product photograph. Moment tag when product-photography stills appear as a beat inside a larger asset — e.g., the spec-shot sequence inside a launch film or the gallery block of a product page.
