The craft, and who hires it
Hired for digital product work: product microcopy and content design, onboarding and activation flows, error/edge-case language, and voice-consistent UI strings — typically bought alongside UX/UI design in digital product engagements.
Crafting the language inside product interfaces — microcopy for buttons, onboarding flows, empty states, error messages, tooltips, and notifications. The craft is clarity under constraint: guiding a user's next action in a few words while staying in the product's voice.
Tag it when…
Tag when a product interface's strings are visibly authored as craft — labels, empty states, onboarding steps, confirmations, or error messages whose wording shows deliberate clarity, brevity, and voice — in a real or presented product UI surface.
Never tag it when…
Never tag marketing prose about a product (that goes to copywriting_brand or copywriting_advertising) — UX writing lives inside the interface, in service of the user's task. Default UI chrome and unremarkable system strings are not craft evidence. The design of the interface itself is UI Design; tag that separately — the presence of a UI is never sufficient basis for this leaf, only the crafted language within it.
Easily mistaken for 3 other crafts
Every other page suggests neighbours by similarity. This one navigates by difference: each line names the craft this is confused with, and the rule for telling them apart.
- design ui design — UI Design is the visual/interaction craft of the interface; UX Writing is the language inside it. A product screen can earn both, but words alone never justify the design tag or vice versa.
- copywriting brand — Brand copy speaks AT an audience on marketing surfaces; UX writing speaks WITH a user inside the product to complete a task.
- copywriting advertising — A CTA in an ad is advertising copy; a button label in a product flow is UX writing — the surface's job (persuade vs guide) tells them apart, not the word itself.
At what size it applies
Asset tag when the item is a product-UI surface or flow whose microcopy is a first-class craft of the piece; moment tag when a crafted interface-language beat (an onboarding step, a memorable error state) appears as a segment inside a larger asset such as a product film or demo.
