The craft, and who hires it
A brand hires generative AI production to get concept-to-screen film, imagery, or synthetic product visuals without a shoot — rapid-iteration campaign content at speed and scale (the market's emerging AI-content divisions, e.g. Tool's Content/AI/Experience split; 'Generative AI Design' in product-design service menus). Bought when the deliverable itself is AI-made media, not when AI merely powers targeting or personalization.
The discipline of producing finished media with generative AI models: directing, prompting, curating, and assembling model-generated video, imagery, or audio as the primary production method — the maker-side craft counterpart to the content_origin=ai_generated provenance facet. Minted CD4 (canon v2 delta 5) together with the ai_generated=>strip-cinematography rule: a wholly model-generated clip carries no camera craft, however live-action it looks. It currently has no specialization leaves, so an honest L1-grain tag is legal (CM1).
Tag it when…
Tag when the item's picture, motion, or audio was created by generative models (text-to-video / text-to-image / generative-audio, Sora/Veo/Midjourney-class): credits, captions, or metadata name a generative tool or prompt-based workflow; visible generation signatures (morphing anatomy, temporal warping, impossible physics, unstable typography) dominate; or content_origin resolves ai_generated while the piece mimics camera or animation craft with no plausible shoot/animation credit. When tagging here on ai_generated footage, apply CD4: strip cinematography from the same item.
Never tag it when…
Never tag from subject matter — an ad ABOUT an AI product or AI brand is industry/product territory, not this craft (a testimonial-style AI-brand video shot on camera is still cinematography + editing; content_type is never a craft basis). Never tag conventional craft that merely used AI tools in the workflow (AI retouch, roto, upscaling, AI-assisted VFX on real footage = ai_assisted origin; the home craft — cinematography, Visual Effects, Retouching — keeps the tag, see the pending per-credit cinematography refile, chunk 7). Never use this node as a provenance stamp — that is the content_origin facet's job (goes to content_origin=ai_generated). And never over-apply the CD4 strip: it removes CAMERA craft (cinematography) only — a wholly AI-generated commercial or branded film keeps its Video Production deliverable leaf and any other true craft tags.
Easily mistaken for 7 other crafts
Every other page suggests neighbours by similarity. This one navigates by difference: each line names the craft this is confused with, and the rule for telling them apart.
- content origin=ai generated (facet) — Origin is a provenance FACET on any content and always co-applies; this discipline is the CRAFT claim that generative production is what was made and how. An ai_generated item whose craft story is genuinely elsewhere keeps its craft tags — but per CD4, camera craft (cinematography) is stripped when the footage is model-generated.
- cinematography (Video Production, canonical id=cinematography) — Cinematography requires a camera and a shoot. A photoreal model-generated clip that LOOKS shot gets Generative AI Production, never cinematography (the CD4 strip rule); real footage graded or cleaned up with AI tools stays cinematography (ai_assisted origin). Cinematography's per-credit refile is pending (chunk 7 — the gated 1,840-row remap).
- visual effects (Mixed Media, canonical id=vfx) — VFX is artist-built CG/compositing applied to a piece, typically over real footage; wholly model-generated imagery is Generative AI Production. AI-assisted VFX on a shot plate stays Visual Effects (ai_assisted origin).
- commercial spot / branded content (Video Production deliverable leaves) — Those leaves name WHAT the deliverable is within video craft; this discipline names the generative production METHOD. They co-apply on a fully AI-generated commercial or branded film — the CD4 strip removes cinematography only, never the deliverable leaf. Neither leaf is ever inferred FROM this tag, and this tag is never inferred from the deliverable type.
- disc animation — Animation is artist-keyframed, rigged, or simulated motion; model-generated motion (text-to-video, generative interpolation) is Generative AI Production even when the output reads as animation.
- disc creative technology — Creative Technology builds interactive systems, tools, and experiences (code as the craft); Generative AI Production makes finished MEDIA with generative models. An AI-powered interactive installation is Creative Technology; its model-generated film content is this discipline.
- svc ai marketing — AI Driven Marketing & Personalization (L0 service) — That is a Level-0 SERVICE — the sell-side martech/personalization offering menu line (credit/lens tier per its CS1 credit-only annotation, never a classify target); this is the production craft that makes AI-generated media. Content items never tag the service.
At what size it applies
ASSET tag when the whole piece IS generative-AI-made — a buyer would call the item an AI-generated film/image set end-to-end. MOMENT tag when a conventionally shot or animated piece CONTAINS a model-generated segment (a clip-worthy generative beat inside otherwise camera/animation craft); the beat lives on the segment, and the parent keeps its own craft tags.
