The craft, and who hires it
Hired for character-led brand storytelling: mascot and brand-character spots, explainer videos with a protagonist, social content and brand narratives where an animated character performs. This is the 'Character' / 'Character Development' craft that studios like BUCK, Elastic, and 23lunes tag their work with.
Animating characters: giving designed figures performance, movement, and acting so they carry the storytelling. The canonical_id group spans 2D and 3D (verified: 2d_animation_character_animation and 3d_animation_character_animation share canonical_id='character_animation'; dimensionality is a facet, not a child tier), and production methods like cel or stop motion ride as Execution tags on top of this leaf.
Tag it when…
Tag when animated characters visibly PERFORM — walk, emote, act, react — and that performance is substantive craft in the piece, not a static character image. Applies across 2D and 3D and across methods (cel, stop motion, CG puppetry): record dimensionality and execution as facets alongside this leaf, never as substitutes for it.
Never tag it when…
Never tag when the character exists only as a static design — that is Design > Character Design (designing the figure vs animating it). Abstract shapes, type, icons, or UI elements in motion with no character performance go to animation_motion_graphics. A CG creature integrated into live-action footage is Post-Production > Visual Effects territory at asset grain. A piece whose only character animation is one beat gets a MOMENT tag for that segment, not this asset tag. Never route on content type or genre — an animated testimonial, tutorial, or ad with a performing character is still Character Animation by craft.
Easily mistaken for 4 other crafts
Every other page suggests neighbours by similarity. This one navigates by difference: each line names the craft this is confused with, and the rule for telling them apart.
- Character Design (Design) — Design = the static craft of creating the figure; this leaf = making it move and act. A hero image of a character is Character Design (asset, Design); the same character performing in a spot is Character Animation (DN-187's own worked pair).
- animation motion graphics — Does something PERFORM (a figure with intent, emotion, acting) or does graphic material move (shapes, type, icons)? Performance → here; graphic motion → Motion Graphics.
- Visual Effects (Post Production) — A CG character composited into camera footage is VFX craft on a live-action asset; this leaf is for animation-built pieces where the character world IS the imagery.
- execution facet (cel / stop motion) — Cel and stop motion are HOW frames were made — Execution METHOD tags on this leaf, never sibling or replacement leaves (Joe's P0-9v2 worked example).
At what size it applies
Asset tag when character performance is the piece's craft substance end-to-end ("the whole piece IS this, to a buyer"). A single character-animation beat inside a live-action or motion-graphics piece is a MOMENT on its segment — the whole-item row must never be the only record of one beat (canon §3).
Pieces that settle the definition
- A Day in the Life of the Dolphin Co-Worker · Made by Liana Paberza with Sora — A designed character (the dolphin co-worker) performs and carries the narrative — character performance IS the craft; link to this node probe-verified
- #MadeWithSora — reel — Character-performance animation; ai_generated origin is an orthogonal facet, craft tags stay; link probe-verified
- 3 new styles, just in time for the holidays: — clip 2 — Animated characters demonstrating styles — performance-led animated content; link probe-verified
