Four more kinds of piece, mined from your own lists

X-01Earnings Report · short

Do we add Earnings Report to the list of words a piece can be labelled with — the one word written on a piece that says what kind of thing it is — and file it beside Press Release?

Earnings Report is on your own old list, and the library has already run the experiment for us: the Microsoft quarterly-results page below is stored as a press release, because a press release was the nearest word we had for it.

Nothing is stored under the new name itself, since a collection of investor communication has never run; it would sit beside Press Release under Corporate Communication — one of your twelve shelves, which are simply the groups you browse the word list by — while the white paper, its nearest cousin among the reference documents, sits under Documentation & Technical instead.

The Dell partnership announcement in the middle is the ordinary case, and it is here for contrast: news a company chose to tell is what Press Release covers well today, which is exactly what the Microsoft quarterly page beside it is not.

My take: Add it. A name with nothing under it costs nothing, and the Microsoft page below is the small version of the expensive day: a piece arrives, no word fits, and it goes under the closest thing we happen to have.

X-02Annual or Investor Report · short

Do we add the designed annual report as its own name, and does it belong under Corporate Communication — which is my read, not your instruction?

The annual report is on your old list and on your touchpoints sheet, and it is a genuine piece of craft — a designed object, where a press release is a written one.

We hold none of them: not one of the 13,938 stored pieces has the words “annual report” in its title, and the nearest things we do hold are the two below — a film of an investor day, and a screenshot of an earnings page that had to be filed as a press release.

The candidates table names no home for it, so Corporate Communication is my inference; and the two words you wrote down, Annual Report and Investor Report, resolve to one name, with the other kept as the word people also search for.

My take: Add it under Corporate Communication, with Annual Report as the single name — that is the common word for it. Say so in your note if you would rather it read Investor Report, and the two swap places.

X-03Recap or Highlights · short

Do we add Recap as its own name, or is Recap the better word for what we now call Event Film — better because it does not assume the piece is a film?

Event and launch recaps are a real kind — the two summit videos below are exactly that, and both are already filed under Event Film.

That is the difficulty in one line: a recap and an event film may be one thing under two words, so adding Recap on its own would split a single kind in half, which is why this belongs in the same pass as the Event Film name rather than ahead of it.

Worth knowing before you rule: an old row called Event Highlights is already on file, switched off, with nothing stored under it — the same idea has been written down before under a different word and then abandoned.

My take: Add it, but rule on it together with the Event Film name. The honest possibility is that we do not need two words at all — that Recap is simply the better one for the 61 pieces already sitting there.

X-04The four folds and parks · short

Do these last four names from your old lists stay off the list — two folded into names you already have, one set aside as a way of writing rather than a kind, and one parked until a bigger question settles?

Two of the four fold: Trend Report becomes another word for Research Report — the name proposed elsewhere in this review for the written research piece — because a trend report reads as a flavour of one rather than a second kind; and Corporate Film becomes another word for Brand Film, since the “vision and strategy” film is a brand film with a corporate subject, the same name the two Sora shorts below carry.

Listicle is the odd one out and does not fold anywhere: it describes how an article is written, not what the piece is, so it is set aside as a way of writing and the piece stays an article.

Reaction Video I would park rather than fold, because it rides on a question nobody has settled yet — whether a piece can be made for the feed first, born there rather than a film that was simply posted there afterwards — and that question is still open in the mechanism section of this review.

My take: Confirm all four as one batch. Everything else on those old lists was a duplicate of a name you already approved, a campaign name, or a fact about where a piece ran — deliberately not proposed, and still listed in full on the recommendation page so that nothing was quietly curated away.
